Sonoma County Interpretive Hikes - Learn about Cultural and Natural History
Unique interpretive hikes are offered throughout Sonoma County. Native American history, philosophy, lifestyles, and subsistence strategies with native plants are explored. You may choose a variety of hikes in pristine settings where you can imagine prehistoric and historic tribes of the Pomo and Coast Miwok as they existed in their ancestral territory. You’ll learn about the Native American way of life in the north Coast Ranges during prehistoric time through the 1800s – their beliefs and myths, ceremonies, seasonal subsistence patterns, tools, and world famous basketry.
Native American mythology and philosophy regarding basketry, plant use, and nature will provide context for understanding past life ways of these rich cultures that once flourished here. A presentation of plants for food, medicines, nets, clothing, shelters, and world famous baskets will be provided. Step back to a place and time where you can imagine aboriginal life as it once was when they danced and gathered abundant nuts and reeds throughout their lands.
Let us know your preference in topics that interest you so that your hike can focus on these – basketry, rock art and interpretation, native plant uses and subsistence, archaeology, artifact interpretation, distinctions between natural resources in different areas for settlement and trade patterns.
Visitors may choose different hiking distances as well as difficulty in terrain.

Decide on the length of your hike and the location you prefer. These outings are great for visitors and groups who are seeking adventure while learning about local history and our relationship with the land.
You can take advantage of undisturbed ranches and State parks in Sonoma County while gaining an understanding of Native American lore and history. Locations may include the redwoods, mixed oak forests, the ocean and beaches, or the Russian River.
Healdsburg — locations near Healdsburg offer gentle to moderately steep trails. A luxurious retreat center is located within gently rolling serene hills of mixed oaks and grasslands. Inhale the scents of oak and bay forest and the bounty of the North Coast Ranges in a setting that nurtures the soul with rich textures of undisturbed wild lands and native plants.
Spring Lake Park - located in northwestern Santa Rosa has whispering willows and mixed oak woodland surrounding serene lake. This 320 acre setting and lake is very calm with water from an underground spring. There are paved paths, bike trails, an environmental discovery center, and a storyteller’s cavern of native basalt. I helped plan the environmental center in the 80’s. It is adjacent to two other parks.
Guerneville - easy trails within a forested flat terrain as well as shaded picnic grounds are accessible by paved roads for enjoying groves of ancient redwood giants. Moderately steep trails throughout the mixed oak woodlands also encircle the bottomlands. Entering this unique millennia old forest will encourage a peaceful, harmonious, and nurturing tranquility to your spirit.
Sonoma Coast Park – plan a half-day or full day trip along the gentle to moderate trails along the bluff tops of the beaches. Vegetation is mostly grasslands with various shrubs. Drainage trails require scaling moderately steep terrain while bluffs are mostly flat. Expect mostly sunny trails with generally cooler temperatures and windier conditions than on inland hikes.
Testimonials
"Feeling in touch with nature as Native Americans might have experienced was the highlight of hiking …(with Fran). Steeped in the anthropological background of the area, Fran was able to instill a quietude that allowed us to feel the spirits of those who came before us as we explored a culture that depended upon and artfully utilized what the land provided."
"I found Ms. Miller's background in local Native American culture to be extensive and enlightening. She was able to create a picture of a pre-history, Native American lifestyle that brought that world alive for me. She was able to weave information on native plant uses, basketry and spirituality into a view of a whole way of life. Fran Miller's experience in archeological field investigations of Native American sites gives her a rich background to draw upon. I would recommend her classes to anyone interested in Native American culture."
